What types of scans do you offer at High Street Radiology?
We provide a range of diagnostic imaging services including MRI, X-Ray, and OPG (dental panoramic imaging). Our MRI is particularly suited to joint, spine, and musculoskeletal conditions.
What are the benefits of your non-claustrophobic MRI scanner?
  • Comfort-first design: Open and quiet — ideal for claustrophobic or nervous patients
  • Targeted imaging: Excellent for spine, joints, ligaments, and soft tissue
  • Weight-bearing options: Can show images under load in some positions (when applicable)
  • Faster bookings: Shorter wait times than large hospital systems
  • Patient-focused experience: Our staff will guide you through every step
What is a low-field strength MRI?
Low-field strength MRI (such as our 0.25 Tesla unit) uses a lower magnetic field than hospital-based high-field MRIs. It still produces high-quality images for bones, joints, and soft tissues relevant to musculoskeletal (MSK) care, and is especially useful for patients who are anxious or uncomfortable in traditional machines.
Are there any limitations to low-field MRI?
Yes. While perfect for musculoskeletal imaging, low-field MRI is not suitable for brain, abdominal, or vascular imaging where higher detail and contrast are required. We will always inform you or your GP if a higher-strength scan is more appropriate for your condition.
Is your MRI scanner non-claustrophobic?
Yes. Our MRI machine has an open, upright design which reduces feelings of claustrophobia and anxiety. Many patients find it far more comfortable than traditional tunnel-style scanners, especially those with mobility issues, anxiety, or breathing concerns.
Do I need a referral to book an MRI?
Yes. In Australia, a referral from your GP, specialist, Chiropractor or allied health practitioner is required for all MRI scans. We can help you with the process if you need it.
Will my MRI be covered by Medicare?
Currently, Medicare does not rebate low-field strength MRI scans unless ordered under very specific circumstances. We will always inform you of costs upfront and provide an estimate prior to your appointment.
How long does an MRI scan take?
An MRI can take 30 to 55 minutes depending on the body part being scanned. We aim to keep you as comfortable as possible throughout the procedure.
How do I prepare for my MRI scan?
You’ll be asked to remove any metal items (jewellery, watches, etc.). Wear comfortable clothing without zippers or metal. Let us know in advance if you have implants, pacemakers, or metal fragments so we can ensure safety.
When will I get my results?
We aim to provide your referring doctor with the report within 48 hours. Our radiologist or clinic staff may contact your GP directly to expedite care if the scan reveals anything urgent.
